The Rise of Christianity: How the Obscure, Marginal Jesus Movement Became the Dominant Religious Force in the Western World in a Few Centuries Paperback – May 9, 1997
Author: Visit ‘s Rodney Stark Page ID: 0060677015

Review

“A provocative, insightful, challenging account of the rise of Christianity.” — — Andrew M. Greeley, National Opinion Research Center, University of Chicago

“Compelling reading…highly recommended.” — Library Journal

“Rodney Stark’s new book will challenge, provoke, and irritate. But anyone who has puzzled over Christianity’s rise to dominance in the Roman Empire, after a scant four centuries, must read it. Here is theoretical brashness combined with disarming common sense, a capacious curiosity, and a most uncommon ability to tell a complicated story in simple prose.” — Wayne A. Meeks, Yale University

“Stark finds that Christians prospered the old-fashioned way: by providing a better, happier and more secure way of life…. In the end, Stark concludes, Christians ‘revitalized’ the Roman Empire.” — Kenneth Woodward, Newsweek

“This book raises, simply and brilliantly, just the kinds of questions anyone concerned with early Christianity should ask.” — Christian Century

“This book raises, simply and brilliantly, just the kinds of questions anyone concerned with early Christianity should ask.” — — The Christian Century

From the Publisher

“Compelling reading” (Library Journal) that is sure to “generate spirited argument” (Publishers Weekly) , this account of Christianity’s remarkable growth within the Roman Empire is already the subject of much fanfare. “Anyone who has puzzled over Christianity's rise to dominance… must read it,” says Yale University's Wayne A. Meeks, for The Rise of Christianity makes a compelling case for startling conclusions. Combining his expertise in social science with historical evidence and his insight into contemporary religion's appeal, Stark finds that early Christianity attracted the privileged rather than the poor, that most early converts were women or marginalized Jews — and ultimately “that Christianity was a success because it proved those who joined it with a more appealing, more assuring, happier, and perhaps longer life” (Andrew M. Greely, University of Chicago).

This is the mystery of two millennia, right? How does an obscure sect led by an executed convict go from less than 100 adherents to an estimated 6 million on the eve on Constantine’s "conversion" in the early fourth century?
Social scientist Rodney Stark did more than puzzle: he created a set of testable hypotheses and tried, via secondary literature (he reads no ancient language and disclaims any expertise in the traditional scholarship of early church history), to probe the key issues. Along the way, he uses contemporary social science findings from demography, the sociology of small groups, the psychology of conversion, medical statistics, and every other conceptual lever he could divine to create a compelling mosaic of findings, arrayed in discrete topical chapters (each of which had a former life as a scholarly article).
Others have pointed out, as does Stark himself, that his work is a strictly scientific enterprise: his own religious views are for himself. he is a sociologist of religion. He gives respectful attention to the historical record of the early church, which consists almost exclusively of the well-known testaments from the early church -New Testament accounts, non-canonic letters and gospels, and works by Eusebius, Tertullian, and their peers. But in the end, the "miracle" of the expansion of the early church seems explicable by a number of readily understandable facts and processes.
For example, the forty percent growth rate per decade from 30 CE to 300 CE, which arithmetically gets one from 40 converts to 6 million, seems virtually miraculous – until Stark compares this rate to the growth achieved by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints – the Mormons – which in the past century has averaged just over 40 percent per decade.
Rodney Stark uses a sociological perspective to reconsider the development of Christianity from the early first century until it became the dominant faith and official religion of the Roman Empire in the fourth century. Stark, who is currently a university professor of social sciences at Baylor University, begins with the basic premise that the development of Christianity is not purely a social and political factor, but rather the product of human faith that stands up to all social phenomena: from interaction with pagan values and persecution, to the various social crises such as epidemic and political disorder. Stark writes, "Whatever one does or doesn’t believe about the divine, obviously God didn’t cause the world to be Christian." That the world has become Christian and will continue to be Christian depends on human effort that is based on the reflection and commitment of that Christian faith and community.

Stark states that the early Christian community gained it converts through a social network built by intimate interpersonal attachment. Interpersonal relations within the early Christian community built a strong social network that allowed the steady growth of conversion during the first centuries. In this context, it becomes important for Stark to reconsider what was the social basis of the early Christian community. Many historians and sociologists in the twentieth century claim that Christianity and all religious movements are driven by the lower social strata in a community. For Stark, this assumption is no longer accurate because of the fact that the early Christians consisted of the privileged and the middle class in the community.

Testament of Youth Audio, Cassette – Abridged, Audiobook
Author: Visit ‘s Vera Brittain Page ID: 0140861599

.com Review

When war broke out in August 1914, 21-year-old Vera Brittain was planning on enrolling at Somerville College, Oxford. Her father told her she wouldn’t be able to go: “In a few months’ time we should probably all find ourselves in the Workhouse!” he opined. Brittain had hoped to escape the Northern provinces, but the war seemingly dashed her plans. “It is not, perhaps, so very surprising that the War at first seemed to me an infuriating personal interruption rather than a world-wide catastrophe.”

Her father eventually relented, however, and she was allowed to attend. By the end of her first year, she had fallen in love with a young soldier and resolved to become active in the war effort by volunteering as a nurse–turning her back on what she called her “provincial young-ladyhood.” Brittain suffered through 12-hour days by reminding herself that nothing she endured was worse than what her fiancĂ©, Roland, experienced in the trenches. Roland was expected home on leave for Christmas 1915; on December 26, Brittain received news that he had been killed at the front. Ten months later Brittain herself was sent to Malta and then to France to serve in the hospitals nearer the front, where she witnessed firsthand the horrors of battle. When peace finally came, Brittain had also lost her brother Edward and two close friends. As she walked the streets of London on November 11, 1918–Armistice Day–she felt alone in the crowds:

For the first time I realised, with all that full realisation meant, how completely everything that had hitherto made up my life had vanished with Edward and Roland, with Victor and Geoffrey. The War was over; a new age was beginning; but the dead were dead and would never return.

First published in 1933, Testament of Youth established Brittain as one of the best-loved authors of her time. Her crisp, clear prose and searing honesty make this unsentimental memoir of a generation scarred by war a classic. –Sunny Delaney –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I first read this book when I was not much younger than Vera Brittain was when she "viewed the outbreak of the First World War as an interruption of her plans", and I was immediately touched by her experiences. I have read (and re-read & re-read) this book many times. While I am not of the same social class that she was, I can relate to her desire to make something of her life, first through a university education (then restricted to many women) and later through finding meaningful work. (This is something that we all seek.) She fell happily in love, only to lose first her fiance, then her two male friends, and finally her beloved only brother in the carnage of the First World War. Her experiences as a V.A.D. (Volunary Aide Detachment) nurse in the war–from describing what the wards were like, to the frenzy she faced during a "push", to watching the Americans arrive in 1917, to her life on the hospital ship "Britannic", that’s right, the sister ship to "Titanic"–both went down, are unforgettable. When she writes, she does not spare herself, nor seek to make herself look good–and she takes an unflinching look at her own difficulties (a word which does not even begin to describe it!!) adjusting to a post-war world which did not want the survivors. She tells of the difficulties she had fitting in (again, but this time older & wisher) at Oxford, of her mental near-breakdown, and of the bright light that was Winifred Holtby. I cannot recommend this book enough. It should be required reading in colleges and universities, and not just for history, English, and womens’ studies majors. Perhaps those who do not understand what all the fuss over "women’s lib." is all about should make this required reading as well (both male and female).

Rush Revere and the First Patriots

Rush Revere and the First Patriots: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Rush Limbaugh ID: B00IN84V06

Nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh has long wanted to make American history come to life for the children of his listeners. In Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims, he created the character of a fearless middle-school history teacher named Rush Revere, who travels back in time and experiences American history as it happens, in adventures with exceptional Americans. In this second book in the series, Rush Revere is transported back to the people and events leading up to the American Revolution.

We loved the book (with historical photographs) but we also loved the audio. Rush’s story is both educational and entertaining! Laugh-out-loud funny at times! Liberty (the talking time-traveling horse) is our favorite character. In book 2, Rush Revere, Liberty, and a couple of the kids travel to events like the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and even to Windsor Castle to meet with King George III. And we loved meeting historical Americans like Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and our favorite, Patrick Henry. We learned about the taxes imposed upon the colonists by Parliament. What a great teaching moment for my kids! And we loved Liberty’s Stomp Act song about the Stamp Act!!! The kids were completely engaged! Was that Rush Limbaugh singing on the audio!? My kids have the song memorized now! They keep singing it over and over! Most importantly, this book teaches the value and importance of fighting for freedom! Favorite line: "Only when we are free can we be all that God wants us to be. Only when we are free can we do all that God wants us to do. Freedom is from God. And when we fight for freedom we always fight on the side of God."

In this sequel to Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims (2013), colonial-dressing history teacher Rush Revere and his special horse Liberty time travel with students Tommy, Freedom, Cameron (Cam), and even snooty Elizabeth back to pre-American Revolution days. They talk to Benjamin Franklin in 1765 when he tried to convince the English Parliament to remove the Stamp Act. They meet Patrick Henry that same year in Virginia prior to his famous 1775 speech to the House of Burgesses. They have an audience in Windsor Palace with King George III in 1766. They visit with Samuel Adams and Paul Revere in Boston, MA, following the “Boston Massacre” in 1770 and participate in the famous Boston Tea Party. And they get to speak with John Adams and even George Washington at the First Continental Congress in 1774 at Philadelphia, PA. There is a lot of interesting insight into the personalities of these important figures of American history.

Yes, the idea of a time-travelling horse may seem silly to some, but remember, this book is designed to appeal to 21st-century kids and get them interested in learning more about the exceptional history of this nation, so it’s not going to be written in a dry, dusty text-book style of simply reciting names, places, and dates that has turned so many students off in studying history. As with the first volume, the left absolutely hates this book, but looking over other reviews, I found that most of the vile epithets hurled were actually against the author and not against the book itself. Some people kept talking about all the errors, but none were really specified. One person did complain that the work of Thomas Jefferson wasn’t included, but Rush Revere and the First Patriots basically covers the time from 1765 to 1774, and Jefferson’s role in American independence really didn’t become prominent until the writing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. So there’s plenty of room for him in a subsequent volume.

My daughter has never liked history and has had a hard time with grades in school. She loves this book more than I could have imagined! A great way for her to learn history that seemed boring to her before.

Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists Kindle Edition

Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists Kindle Edition

This book is full of useful information and has a permanent place on my bookshelf but it’s written with all of the engagement qualities of a DIY furniture assembly manual. Nothing against this particular author because he simply follows a presumably proud tradition of textbook writing, but why must so many textbooks be stick-in-the-eye experiences? Passive voice, cumbersome language usage, mind-numbing prose… all of the qualities we’re told never to use by our composition teachers beginning in grade school. I guess most PhDs feel exempt from the rules of readability. Perhaps Dr Rosenthal (The Encyclopedia of Counseling) could start a side business teaching other academics how to write in a manner that doesn’t put the rest of us to sleep.

This book is a great tool for counselors who want to be more informed about medication options. The holistic approach taken by the authors is helpful from a mental health and wellness perspective. It helps therapist take into consideration best practices and evidence based approaches.

I appreciated the sixth edition for teaching a master’s course in psychopharmacology to clinical psychology trainees. It was concise but informative and well written. However, the 7th edition looks to be almost identical to the sixth and I see no reason why a new edition was needed.

This book does a very clear job of defining emotional blackmail so you can begin to easily spot emotional blackmailers in your life. It then concludes with telling you specifically how to deal with emotional blackmail, that is, how to keep your energy, resources, and sometimes your very soul, from being stolen by them.
Something that was particularly important for me personally in the book was the part at the end where she talks about not emotionally blackmailing *yourself*! What an insight! I realized that even when rigid, controlling people are not around to inspire guilt, fear and shame in me to get me to do things that are hurtful to me for their selfish benefit, I have a "voice" in my head that does the job for them, telling me that whatever I do that doesn’t fit the world view of past and present blackmailers is "wrong," "selfish," or even "evil." So I beat myself up on behalf of my blackmailers even when they are not around to do it.
I also was impressed by the insight that not only does it "take two to tango," that no one can blackmail me if I don’t let them, but that it is also possible for me to actually "train" people to blackmail me. This is particularly, true, I think, for those of us raised in rigid, controlling homes with emotionally blackmailing parents. Thereafter, we are, so to speak, fertile ground for any future emotional blackmailers.
I had rather been realizing these sorts of things the past few years now that I’m in my 40s (the middle years when we suddenly reevaluate our whole life), and gradually eliminating emotional blackmailers from my life, without exactly using that term. (The term I used was ridding myself of people whose presence felt like "being nibbled to death by ducks.") This book has validated my innate human "right" to not be eaten alive by the selfish demands of others.
Kudos to Ms. Forward!

I have done a pretty thorough reading of books dealing with control, cults, emotional abuse, etc. I feel like I could write a thesis on this stuff by now. This was the best all around. I am a third party observing a loved one in a controlling relationship. There isn’t a book out there that really addresses my situation, but I have gleaned wisdom from many. What I love about this book is that it gives very concrete strategies for dealing with controlling people. The strategies are very well laid out, lots of examples of phrases that neutralize the offender. As a therapist, she also addresses the discomfort many of us would likely encounter when trying to put these strategies into practice. In addition to the concrete information on strategies, she describes why it might be hard to recognize that you are in an unhealthy controlling situation and how to know for sure. She helps clarify the personal damage victims of control sustain. I have become much more aware of people in my life that may be using unhealthy methods of control and have used the advice to stop, think and strategize to help me. It even helped me become a little wiser to ploys of friends of my kids. This book shows us how to resolve unhealthy control without necessarily having to end the relationship. With these techniques everyone might just come out a winner.

We are not victims of manipulation. We allow manipulation to happen to us and with careful observation we can neutralize it. This is what Susan Forward believes. I don’t know if I agree because I haven’t yet had a chance to practice her techniques in earnest, but I needed to comment on the content itself of the book, "Emotional Blackmail".
It is impossible for an author to address every specific detail of every reader’s personal situation. But this is as close as you can get. Forward gives stories and testimonials of people she has worked with who have used her techniques with success. Unlike other authors that do this, however, Forward does not simply apply the techniques to those situations and expect that you’ll be able to apply it to a scenario of your own. She separates the stories from the guidelines. She provides some fantastic exercises for further clarity of the techniques she describes.
One of the techniques I especially enjoyed reading about was "buying your time". Don’t respond immediately to your blackmailer. Give them time to "stew". In other words, try to avoid snap decisions when dealing with blackmailers. She groups manipulators into different categories. "Tantalizers" are the group I deal with most often. They are the ones who get you to do what they want by making it appear there is something incredible in it for you. This may sometimes be the case, but it’s important to realize that your needs are not the manipulator’s true motivation. Forward explains and clarifies this beautifully.
This is a very well-written book and I recommend it highly.

The Malloreon, Vol. 1 PDF

The Malloreon, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Guardians of the West, King of the Murgos, Demon Lord of Karanda Paperback – August 30, 2005
Author: Visit ‘s David Eddings Page ID: 0345483863

Series: The MalloreonPaperback: 816 pagesPublisher: Del Rey; New edition edition (August 30, 2005)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0345483863ISBN-13: 978-0345483867 Product Dimensions: 6.1 x 1.4 x 9.2 inches Shipping Weight: 1.8 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #26,111 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #3125 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction #4288 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy
Eddings is (with wife Leigh..are?) a terrific fantasy writer. He creates sprawling epics that maintain their page-turning intensity and characters that are interesting. He does that here, too, at times, but there are disquieting aspects to this sequel to the Belgariad. It is very fine at times, but it is not as good as the original, The Belgariad. In part, that is simply because the sequel runs into what sequels usually run into–the sense of excitement coming from a new discovery is gone and can’t be recaptured. But in addition, Eddings goes out of his way here to recreate the first series–the heroes have a similar goal in mind and the plot is more or less the same. Even that’s not enough for him, evidently–not only is the plot more or less the same, Eddings even goes so far as to introduce a plot device that has certain events from the Belgariad deliberately repeated (the characters even explicitly discuss fate recreating past events along the way). This makes the Malloreum sometimes seem like a cheap rehash, particularly given that the basic plot is identical to the Belgariad, with a few extra cherries on top.

Second, the tight knit band of heroes becomes quite tiresome now. Eddings goes to the well too often with the repetitive interplay between the characters. It is as if the same joke is repeated over and again. It was funny the first time we met Beldin. It is not as funny the 50th time he insults Belgarath, or Velvet takes the wind out of Silk’s sails, or Silk pretends to take offense when someone uses a candid word (like "swindle"), or Vella reaches once more for her daggers at some slight. Enough!! By the end of the series, actually, well before that, the characters are simply caricatures.
"The Malloreon" is the sequel in five tomes to David Eddings’ "The Belgariad". This special edition compiles the first three books of "The Malloreon": "Guardians of the West", "King of the Murgos" and "Demon Lord of Karanda".

In those books, we get to meet the characters we learn to love in "The Belgariad", and some new ones (for example, Silk will meet a young woman that is more than his match). There is plenty of adventure, magic and a lot of that quirky sense of humour so characteristic of Eddings at his best. There is also a new quest: Belgarion’s son has been kidnapped by an evil sorcerer named Zandramas in order to fulfill an ancient prophecy. If Belgarion and his friends want to save him, they will need to fulfill a parallel prophecy, and vanquish Zandramas. The fate of the world as they know it is in their hands…

Of course, and almost needless to say, I strongly advise you to read these books in order. By that, I mean reading first the five tomes of "The Belgariad" and only afterwards start the five tomes of "The Malloreon". That is the way in which these books were meant to be read, and they are strong reasons for that. Make yourself a favour, and read them books in the correct order, as you will enjoy the series even more.

All in all, I highly recommend "The Malloreon Volume One". I read these books ages ago, but I still enjoy them a lot. Truth to be told, I didn’t really need this special edition of the first 3 books in "The Malloreon", as I already am the proud owner of these books in their Spanish edition. All the same, I decided to buy them again in order to be able to read the series in its original language, English.

This set is an excellent introduction to meditation. The four meditations can be practiced at any level of intensity the listener chooses. Zinn encourages the listener to be flexible to make the meditations restful and relaxing. He has a gentle, quiet style, guiding the listener through each meditation to focus attention and increase mindfulness. He provides clear directions and offers suggestions throughout each aspect of the program. His encouragement and observations will be particularly useful for beginners, and this set of four provides a core of meditations that can be used in various orders and intensities. I have purchased this CD set despite some of the really bad reviews it got from some users. I have just started using it, and I list some of the good and some of the not so good impressions about it:

Good:
– The sessions are adequately long. 45 minutes is really required to achieve optimal state of relaxation and mindfulness. Many of the other meditation CDs I found way too short (eg. 10-15 minutes a session)
– Kabat-Zinn is a renowned researcher in his field, he really knows what he’s talking about. You can indeed reach deep levels of relaxation with his CDs.
– The set mixes Midfulness Meditation with Mindfulness Yoga. This is great, because it makes the practice more interesting.

Not so good:
– I really like meditating with some ambient music in the background, to block out disturbing noises. This meditation CD set is recorded with narration only – there’s no music. I have however resolved this easily by digitalizing the CDs and mixing them with David Miles Huber’s excellent meditation music. This resulted in MP3s that are truly excellent to listen to on my MP3 player.

My advice is that you buy the companion book, "Full Catastrophe Living" from Kabat-Zinn. Read the book first, and then start practicing with the CDs. It is very important to understand how Kabat-Zinn recommends you approach meditation, and without reading the book you will not be able to take full advantage of the CD.

Finally, although some said that Jon Kabat-Zinn’s voice is annoying, I did not find it so. It comes down to individual tastes I guess. Rather than concentrating on the quality of the voice, just listen to the message it carries. After all, meditation – among other things – is about being non-judgmental, right?
It well known that Jon Kabat-Zinn is one of the biggest names in meditation instruction and has done much to give the field academic credibility and validation. His work is valuable and this CD is no exception. However, it seems to be overly ambitious and incomplete without other information to augment it. At the least, you need his book FULL CATASTROPHE LIVING to go along with it.

For context, I am a former research scientist and taught physiology in a university and was a biochemist for Merck. I have a good background in yoga, meditation and have done graduate work in Integral Psychology which studies psychology within the context of the world’s wisdom traditions. I also teach meditation as part of my living including using biofeedback and other western aids to learning these concepts. This context will help you to judge the merit of my interview and the point of view I’m writing it for.

One thing I like about this CD is that in a sense it is one stop shopping. In one package, you get a Body Scan Meditation, A thorough Mindfulness Meditation methodology and some basic yoga instruction. This is a lot to get in one package and usually you don’t get a Body Scan Meditation along with a Mindfulness practice in the same set. All of these meditations and the yoga instruction is useful, but while technically accurate Jon Kabat-Zinn doesn’t have the most soothing voice, there was little though to music of any aesthetic dimension which helps one to enter various mind states and there is a bit of a clinical feel the whole series.

With respect to the yoga instruction, I think this information is useful for someone who has studied at least a little bit with a teacher or who has attended classes.

Start-Up Nation

Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Dan Senor ID: B002VGER2I

Start-Up Nation addresses the trillion-dollar question: How is it that Israel – a country of 7.1 million, only 60 years old, surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding, with no natural resources – produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful, and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada, and the UK?With the savvy of foreign policy insiders, Senor and Singer examine the lessons of the country’s adversity-driven culture, which flattens hierarchy and elevates informality – all backed up by government policies focused on innovation. In a world where economies as diverse as Ireland, Singapore, and Dubai have tried to re-create the “Israel effect”, there are entrepreneurial lessons well worth noting. As America reboots its own economy and can-do spirit, there’s never been a better time to look at this remarkable and resilient nation for some impressive, surprising clues.

There is a growing literature which speaks of the distinctiveness of Israel and its unique contribution to global culture. I think most recently of George Gilder’s outstanding ‘The Israel Test’. No doubt one impulse for the creation of such books has been the worldwide campaign to delegitimize Israel, as prelude to physically destroying it. Thus the very pro- Israel books come in a way as contributions to the justification of the Jewish state, and as defense of it. What is of course distressing about this, and the need for paeans to Israeli exceptionality is the fact that Israel is the only country in the world which is required to ‘justify’ its existence in this way.
In any case this present book focuses on Israel’s scientific and even more technological achievements. It speaks about the Israeli reaction to the Arab boycott, and the special situation of ‘confinement’ Israelis feel at not having normal access to neighboring countries. Israel is a very small country physically and thus many have a certain claustrophobic sense , especially those youngsters who have served in the Army. After the Army many young people adventurously use their new – found freedom.
Two forms of this are the trekking Israelis do throughout distant regions of the world, with special emphasis on South America, and the India- Nepal region, and the ‘tech-ing’ Israelis do in creating start-ups at a rate all out of proportion to their numbers in the world. Israelis have hooked into high- tech communications and rode on the wave of a world economy which is increIDgly electronic.
The start- ups too come in part because of an encouraging government policy, which devotes a high proportion of funds to research.
Beyond Clusters: Review of Dan Senor & Saul Singer, Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle (Twelve, 2009).
Ari Applbaum
December 2009

I wrote my first business plan in high school. The two-page plan (perhaps an overstatement) was promptly filed and forgotten instead of pitched to investors. The concept of offering free internet access to attract an audience for highly targeted advertising was later "stolen" by California-based NetZero, a company once valued at three billion dollars. This type of Chutzpa, a teenager’s audacity to think he could reinvent the way people connect to the Internet, is not uncommon in Israel.

But why? Why does Israel produce "more start-up companies than large, peaceful and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada and the United Kingdom?" Why is it that "after the United States, Israel has more companies listed on the NASDAQ than any other country in the world?" These are the questions Dan Senor and Saul Singer set out to answer in their short and intriguing book.

Senor and Singer begin by asserting that the answer "it’s simple – Jews are smart, so it’s no surprise that Israel is innovative" will not suffice as it "obscures more than it reveals". Instead they offer a thesis based on the Cluster Theory of Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter. Porter’s clusters are "geographic concentrations of interconnected companies, specialized suppliers, service providers, and associated institutions in a particular field,(1)" in Israel’s case, high-tech. The closeness and interconnectedness of such institutions help foster innovation and economic growth.

The Short and Snarky Guide to Coxing & Rowing PDF

The Short and Snarky Guide to Coxing & Rowing: Straight Talk on Coxing and Rowing from Real Coxswains Paperback – August 20, 2014

I LOVE IT THIS IS A NESCESITY FOR ALL ROWERS AND COXSWAINS AND COACHES ALIKE

As a freshman boys rowing coach I can say with certainty that this is a MUST READ AND MUST HAVE! Not only did I read it and laughed out loud but I insisted every coxswain on our team needed to buy it and read it!
Let’s be honest, most books on rowing are a bit.. Dry.. Ironic right?
Not this one! As a rower turned coach I knew the basics of coxswains terms but when our team lost our "coxswain coach" I realized we were in trouble. I went to coxswain clinics to help become our new source of information which was very helpful and informative but I needed to be able to reach our kids on a deeper level, a visual learning level..being able to hand a novice or even our experienced coxswains an easy to read, informative and funny book that contains all they need has become invaluable!
THANK YOU SHORT AND SNARKY!

I’ve only been rowing for a little over a year, and never coxed until very recently. Basically, I had no clue what I was doing, so I bought this book to help me figure it out so I don’t crash a boat. Let’s be honest, I’m not ever going to be going to the Olympics or anything, but I want to keep my crew and my equipment as safe as possible. I LOVE this book. First, there are PICTURES! Tons and tons of pictures! I’m a very visual person, so getting to see what something should look like, and the step-by-step breakdown of it has been enormously helpful. Second, the book is broken down into short segments, so if I only have 10 minutes, I can study over a few things pretty quickly. Third, (and possibly the most important), the book is well-written, funny and holds my attention, which isn’t easy to do. I knew if I got some bland instruction book, I would ultimately never read it. I’ve bought this book for myself, and have bought more copies as gifts.

Dynasty of Evil

Dynasty of Evil: Star Wars (Darth Bane): A Novel of the Old Republic Hardcover – December 8, 2009
Author: Visit ‘s Drew Karpyshyn Page ID: 0345511565

Review

“It’s a testament to how strong the writing and characters are that I was unable to predict how it would end, even up to the very last page… Works perfectly in rounding off the loose ends from the first two books, whilst also leaving enough room to continue, with plenty of Star Wars action along the way. 9/10” Emotionally Fourteen

"Star Wars: Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil" is the final part to the Darth Bane trilogy, which in my opinion is one of the best series in the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU). This novel continues ten years after the events of "Rule of Two", the second novel in the trilogy. To avoid plot spoilers of the first two novels, I will try and make the summary of the plot as broad as possible.

With the Rule of Two established: one Master to wield the power and pass on the wisdom, and one apprentice to learn, challenge, and ultimately usurp the Dark Lord in a duel to the death. However, things aren’t necessary going according to plan. Darth Zannah, Bane’s acolyte, has yet to prove herself in mortal combat with her master. Determined that the Sith Empire will not collapse and die with Bane, he vows to learn how to become immortal.

I will be honest, as much as I like Darth Bane; I actually ended up liking Zannah more by the end of this novel. It seems to me that author Drew Karpyshyn has spent more time developing Zannah, which may or may not be a good thing depending on how fascinated you are with her character. She steals the novel with more complexities that develop her character more than the last two books. She is also part of a side plot that brings new life into the series.

I have always been a supporter of Karpyshyn and his bodies of work; however, I must admit that this is the weakest novel in the series. He reworks ideas that have already been developed in the first two novels. Bane ultimately goes on another adventure to become an unstoppable force of destruction, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it becomes more of the same old. Moreover, it also seems that the author’s ability to create fresh ideas has all but diminished.
With Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil, Drew Karpyshyn ends his trilogy chronicling the powerful Sith Lord’s ascension to power and formation of an order based on the Rule of Two. In the second book, Bane and his apprentice Darth Zannah firmly established their working relationship and additionally managed to deceive the galaxy into believing the Sith Order was extinct. Bane had ostensibly trained Zannah to one day overthrow him and take an apprentice of her own, furthering the Sith cause and continuing the slow progression to overthrowing the galaxy. As Dynasty of Evil starts, Bane is still waiting on Zannah to challenge him, and indeed has begun to wonder if she has what it takes to be the next Sith Lord. Therefore, Bane is looking for alternatives, one of which would be prolonging his own life to ensure the future of the Sith (and of course perpetuate his own power).

Two key elements from the prior books feature in this story. One is Serra, the daughter of Caleb the healer who saved Bane’s life in years past. She is living a new life as a princess on the harsh mining world of Doan (a place reminiscent of Bane’s own childhood world Apatros). The other is Lucia, a member of Bane’s old Brotherhood of Darkness regiment the Gloom Walkers: she’s now Serra’s bodyguard and friend. Completing the main cast is The Huntress, a Force-sensitive assassin who revels in the hunt and uses her latent Force abilities to her advantage, and Set Harth, an ex-Jedi artifact hunter who lives purely for his own pleasure. These two play into the plot as candidates for new apprentices as Bane and Zannah scheme to their own ends.

Dynasty of Evil features two particularly page-turning action sequences (along with quite a few other battles, naturally).

This is *the* book to refer to get a proper understanding of the philosophy of Yoga.
I have gone through other books ( B. K. S. Iyengar , Georg Feuerstein , Swami Prabhavananda ) and some audio cassetes on the Yoga Sutras.
This is by far the best book on the subject. The sutras are beautifully explained in layman terms with ample annotations. The sutras in samadhi pada and sadhana pada are covered extensively.
Whenever there was a discrepency in the translation among different authors (such as sutras 18,19,33 of sadhana pada, which have been interpreted very differently) I found the translation and explanation in this book to be most logical, intuitive and complete.

Swami Satchidananda’s book on the Sutras is one of the best for digging into the background and foundations of the Sutras, and his commentary, unlike Iyengar’s and most other eastern commentaries, is clear, simple and easy to understand. Yet I finished the book still feeling that I did not fully grasp it. Swami Satchidananda is clearly in touch with the truth that he is illuminating with this book, and it’s also clear from the powerful tone of authority with which he writes that he has reached the state of awaking which is the end purpose of the Sutras, but it seems too immersed in the history and culture of Hinduism to be fully appreciated and grasped by a westerm mind conditioned by concepts, ideas and images that are vastly different from the eastern traditions. So the book does not have a deep and profound illuminating impact as has McAfee’s book on the sutras – "Beyond the Siddhis". But it is rich in historical information and its tone is true to the purpose of the Sutras. I would recommend it for for all aspiring yogis.

I gained much from this book. A great book for those who are gaining an interest in yoga as a whole. The author is a monk who has devoted his life to God and it shows through in his writing. Each sutra is written in Sanskrit, then proper pronunciation, then translated in English and then given commentary by Satchidananda. Sometimes he seems to go on tangents and forgets about the Sutra at hand, yet even in those tangents, much is learned. This book will take beginners to the next level of discipline and practice; an extremely useful reference for experienced practitoners. I highly recommend this book.

Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? Epub Download

Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms?: When My Lab Tests Are Normal Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Datis Kharrazian ID: B00CEA0YLE

Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? was written to address the true causes of hypothyroidism in this country and how to manage them. The vast majority of hypothyroid cases are caused by Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune reaction, and are being treated inappropriately or misdiagnosed by the standard health care model. Through exhaustive research and clinical experience, Dr. Kharrazian has discovered the many causes of hypothyroidism, including autoimmunity, and how to manage it.

Datis Kharrazian has done some groundbreaking thinking, research, and writing. He excels in putting together some very complicated data, from a variety of disciplines, into a coherent protocol that addresses not only thyroid disorders, but all autoimmune issues.

First, of the over 50% of people in the United States who suffer from hypothyroidism, the vast majority have an autoimmune condition that’s attacking the thyroid. So while the end RESULT is hypothyroidism, the CAUSES are many and varied, and other systems are affected as well. To name just a few other interconnected systems and problems: leaky gut/poor digestion; adrenal exhaustion, which leads to malfunction; impairment of the liver (where the unabsorbable T4 thyroid hormone is converted into the more active and absorbable T3 thyroid hormone); and of course, environmental pollutants or heavy metals such as mercury, which can damage every system in the body.

The problem with giving people thyroid hormone is that it may not address what caused the hypothyroid symptoms in the first place. (Note I said "MAY not address"; some people do very well taking natural thyroid hormone or a synthetic T3/T4 compound.) First, says Dr. Kharrazian, address the causes of the autoimmune response, and the thyroid problem will take care of itself.

One of the most important things to do is avoid gluten, a sticky protein found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, triticale, semolina, and durham (and sometimes oats, when they’re contaminated with wheat). According to the authors of Dangerous Grains (different book now), half of the US population may be intolerant to gluten.
I’m a lay person who has had thyroid disease for 43 years. The idea of going gluten free if you have autoimmune thyroid disease is nothing new, but withholding that information as a way of luring thyroid patients to buy the book goes precisely to why Dr. Kharrazian’s book-form infomercial is a turn-off for me.

Dr. K is obviously very bright and articulate. The bottom line of the book? Go to see his specially trained practitioners (read chiropractors) who have taken his seminars; they are the only ones who can sell his secretly formulated supplements. Those are likely to be the same chiropractors who have just rated this book 5 stars. What happened to the good old days when people wrote just a plain old book….not a plan for a pyramid sch..er..marketing empire? I just could not get past it.

On Dr K’s web page I listened to the radio interview where he didn’t present himself as a chiropractor, but rather as someone holding a doctorate in medical research. I pictured him in the halls of a medical center conducting studies. I was quite impressed until I googled the school he went to–it’s an online one. While I’m sure he wrote a dissertation on the subject of medical research, I’m equally sure this is NOT the hard science research degree Dr K would like to have us believe it is. In my opinion, his research for this book shows it by its paucity of references to sound studies. I’d be more impressed if he hadn’t trumpeted his online "doctorate" at all.

I found the help I was looking for, but not from this book, which targets the vast number of people–especially women–not doing well, suffering from the seeming vacuum of knowledge among physicians and endocrinologists treating autoimmune thyroid disease and resultant adrenal stress.
UPDATE for those looking for help with autoimmune, fatigue, etc. I find helpful Ayurvedic doctors experienced in balancing hormones and lymphatic system for better results. John Douillard’s website lifespa has many articles, audios and videos for free that educate on lymphatic-autoimmune connection and you can purchase a telephone consult from him if you are not in the Boulder, Colorado area. Organic India’s March 2014 newsletter is on Thyroid. Manjistha (available from ) is a great affordable gentle way to start getting your lymphatic, digestion, and elimination systems working correctly and then your body automatically corrects autoimmune conditions and other disfunction and becomes healthier.

+++ original review ++++

A HEALTHY gluten-free diet is REQUIRED in Datis’ protocol and may actually be the only change the reader needs to get a healthy thyroid and lose the hypo/hyperthyroid symptoms. If you aren’t knowledgeable about gluten’s effects or how immune system and thyroid work, you may want to read this book but there are better ones out there that aren’t infomercials for their system of 1) go to their specially trained chiropractor who charges fees so high that the insurance company won’t/can’t reimburse them and they refuse to accept what the insurance company says their service is worth, 2) pay for tests that aren’t covered by insurance and are not recognized by the AMA as supporting authoritative medical diagnosis but tests that are simply designed to tell you not what nutrients you are deficient in but which of THEIR supplements you need to purchase and 3) purchase THEIR supplements which probably are not the best ones out there for your individual needs and treatment.
